Computer games often come up with scenarios such as racing, war, etc. which a common Joe might not be encountering in everyday life. This leads to a feeling of vicariousness whereby the player enjoys the highs and lows by merely playing the game and not actually at the ’scene’ of the race or war.
Pyschologists opine that this provides the gamer with the level of confidence and freedom which he or she does not encounter in real life and this is the root cause of the addiction.
